The Adams County Chapter of the American Red
Cross is an organization of volunteers dedicated to meeting the needs of our neighbors. We
provide services in a caring and impartial manner, helping them to prevent, prepare for,
and respond to emergencies. We provide services that are consistent with the mission of
the National American Red Cross.
Where We Are Today
The Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross
has just celebrated its 83rd anniversary. The Chapter was rechartered in 1994-1995. It was
the first time that the National Red Cross had established standards for service delivery,
and the Chapter came through the process in good shape. There are over 300 volunteers
delivering a full range of services, supported by two full-time and one part-time
employee. Pam Shaffer, the current Chapter Manager, has been in her position for nine
years.
Major milestones in the Chapter's growth have included the Great Flood of 1993 and
the collision of a commuter airliner with a private plane in late 1996. The flood resulted
in a significant boost in disaster service and preparedness. The Chapter now boasts 20
DSHR volunteers, and they are called into action about twice a year. There are significant
disaster supplies, and the Chapter now has an ERV (Emergency Response Vehicle).
The Chapter's growth has been limited by its physical facility. The current
building was dedicated in 1963, and it doubled in size in 1990. It was dedicated to Ada
Hines, Chapter Manager for 20 years, earlier in the century. The Chapter is considering
options for expansion, including a new Chapter House. The strategic planning process began
in May 1997 and enabled the Chapter to evaluate itself, and the decisions it faces. |
