Since 1917 people have turned to the Adams County Chapter during disasters and emergencies. Today, 87 years later, people still turn to the Red Cross here in Adams County, not only in times of need, but to prepare themselves to help when the call goes out. Neighbors helping neighbors, that's what the Red Cross is all about. Presently over 540 trained and dedicated volunteers, young and old, are helping their neighbors through the Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross everyday. These people give of themselves to help and aid others whenever the need arises. You can find Red Cross volunteers everywhere, working at blood drives, teaching CPR classes, or working in local hospitals and nursing homes. We at the Adams County Red Cross want to thank everyone involved for making this chapter a success for the past 87 years. Chapter Mission

The Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross is an organization of volunteers dedicated to meeting the needs of our neighbors. We provide services in a caring and impartial manner, helping them to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. We provide services that are consistent with the mission of the National American Red Cross.

Where We Are Today

The Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross has just celebrated its 87th anniversary. The Chapter was rechartered in 1994-1995. It was the first time that the National Red Cross had established standards for service delivery, and the Chapter came through the process in good shape. There are over 540 volunteers delivering a full range of services, supported by five full-time and one part-time employee. Pam Shaffer, the current Chapter Manager, has been in her position for 13 years.

Major milestones in the Chapter's growth have included the Great Flood of 1993 and the collision of a commuter airliner with a private plane in late 1996. The flood resulted in a significant boost in disaster service and preparedness. The Chapter now boasts 20 DSHR (Disaster Services Human Resource) volunteers, who respond to national disasters.   These people give up their time and families to help other people in the United States at the time of a disaster.

The Chapter moved to our new modern, accessible, facility February 2004.  The address is 3000 N 23rd Street, Quincy 62305.  The 18,000 sq ft facility is providing the meansfor the American Red Cross to be more efficient and more effective to serve all peopl,e in Adams County.  The hundreds of Red Cross Volunteers who deliver programs and services now have adequate workspace, ample parking for Staff, Volunteers, Clients and Customers even those who need handicap accessiblity, and the ability to utilize the tools they need to deliver services.  Preparing people for emergencies helps build a stronger community.  Lives will be saved because of training provided in the classrooms that are a vital part of this new building.  We now have a fixed blood collection site in our builing.  Every Wednesday 10:00 am - 2:00 pm  and Thursdays 1:00  - 7:00 pm you may donate blood.  In addition the last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of the every month we conduct platelet pheresis collections.  Appointments are required for pheresis donations.  If you are interested, call our office for more information.  More lives will be saved and quality of life in Adams County enhanced due to the new Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross Facility.
